RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Police say three people were taken into custody after a chase Friday morning.
Police say the incident began when the owner of the pickup called Pennington County Dispatch to report the vehicle stolen and told the dispatcher that he was following it. Shortly after, a state highway patrol trooper spotted the pickup on Elk Vale Road and tried to stop it, but the driver took off.
The chase continued onto Mount Rushmore Road and Skyline Drive before turning down Tower Road. A Rapid City Police officer assisting in the chase deployed spike strips, which the driver attempted to avoid but lost control and drove down an embankment.
After the pickup came to a stop, two occupants took off on foot. A third stayed in the vehicle. All three were caught and taken into custody.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
The suspects’ identities and the charges against them are being withheld while the investigation is ongoing.
