Three girls honored for life saving efforts

MEADE COUNTY, S.D. – A week after being recognized by the Sturgis City Council, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office has commended three young ladies who went above and beyond in saving a drowning swimmer at Bear Butte Lake.

On July 5, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a swimmer in distress at Bear Butte Lake. Multiple emergency personnel responded to the lake. Upon arrival, it was evident that the swimmer was in danger of drowning, but three young women had already taken action to assist. As emergency crews prepared to enter the water, Annika Goetz, Kaylee Miranda-Petersen, and Gracey Schave had successfully rescued the swimmer using a paddle board.

On Monday, the community had the honor of recognizing these three individuals for their quick and heroic actions. Sheriff Pat West presented them with certificates for their lifesaving efforts, and Meade County Cares awarded them gift certificates to Tropical Smoothie, acknowledging their well-deserved chance to relax.
