Thunderstorms bring some minor flooding to parts of the Black Hills Sunday

SUMMERSET, S.D. – Thunderstorms brought some heavy rain resulting in some localized flooding Sunday afternoon.

Residents in the Piedmont-Summerset area reported between 2 and 3 inches of rain and in downtown Rapid City, nearly two-and-a-half inches of rain was reported.

Both downtown Rapid City and the Rapid City Airport broke their daily records for rainfall Sunday. Downtown Rapid City received 2.22-inches, breaking the previous record of 1.05-inches for July 24th. The airport received 1.18-inches, breaking the previous record of 0.80″.

The National Weather Service says minor flooding was occurring along parts of Rapid Creek as well as other low-lying and flood-prone locations along Rapid Creek.

Black Hawk reported just over two-and-a-half inches of rain and Ellsworth Air Force Base reported just under an inch.

Sturgis missed out on the heavy rain, as the thunderstorms remained on an easterly track just to the south.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected through Tuesday, with the best chances tonight and Monday. A few storms could be strong to severe with wind gusts of 60 mph and hail of 1 inch in diameter.

Temperatures during the week generally will be near to slightly below average, with highs in the 70s and 80s.
