Thursday COVID-19 Update; Pennington County records new death, Custer County has first case

PIERRE, S.D. – The Thursday COVID-19 report affects the Black Hills area in several ways as a new death was reported and a county records its first case.

The Department of Health reported today 87 new COVID-19 cases statewide and two new deaths. One of those deaths was in Pennington County; the other in Minnehaha.

As for new cases in the area, Custer County reported their first COVID-19 case today. Pennington County added 18 new cases today, Meade County has 2 new positive tests, Ziebach reported a case and Oglala Lakota County has 2 new cases.

The new cases in Oglala Lakota County have moved them to substantial community spread on the community impact map. It was one of three counties that saw changes.

Other new case numbers today include 33 in Beadle, 8 in Minnehaha, 4 in Brown, 3 each in Clay, Lincoln and Todd, 2 in Lake and one each in Codington, Day, Hamlin, Jerauld, Lyman, Roberts, and Union counties.

The state reported 8 new hospitalizations today and there are 86 people total in the hospital, down one from yesterday.

Active cases are up four to 1,020 statewide.
