RAPID CITY, S.D. – Fire crews were battling a handful of fires sparked Wednesday across the Black Hills.
Among the largest, according to Great Plains Fire Dispatch, is the Red Canyon Fire burning northeast of Edgemont. It was listed at 100 acres as of Thursday morning.
Though the fire is not currently threatening densely populated areas, its intensity and quick growth brought a large response of fire crews. Federal, state and local resources were battling the blaze.
Meanwhile, another fire was reported in Custer State Park, about 2 miles southwest of the State Game Lodge.
The Barns Canyon Fire was 12 acres as of Thursday morning and was located in a fairly remote area with no threat to structures or other improvements as of yet.
Other fires reported today include the Sage Creek Fire 11 miles south of Wall in Badlands National Park and the Bigfoot Fire 17 miles southwest of Wall. Both were listed under an acre.
And, the Missle Fire 25 miles north of Belle Fourche was 16 acres as of Thursday morning.
