SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sturgis Post 33 Titans entered the first round of the American Legion playoffs as a long shot, but gave the top seeded Sioux Falls Post 15 East squad all that they could handle before falling 3-1 in the best-of-three series. Â
Titan ace right hander Kain Peters started the game for Sturgis Post 33 and shut down Post 15 early, giving up just two hits and no runs through two innings. Â
The Titans got on the board in the third inning after Dylan Christenson doubled, scoring one Bricon Herron from third base.
Post 15 East jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Andrew Glovich hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Sawyer Tolk from third. Â Myles Rees scored three pitches later on a sacrifice fly by Tristan Fitzsimmons and Sioux Falls led 2-1.
Jack Smith added a run for Post 15 in the bottom of the fifth, crossing home plate following a ground out by Tolk. The 3-1 lead held on for Sioux Falls East, as the Titans couldn’t muster enough offense late in the game to plate any runs.Â
Rees got the complete game win for Post 15 East. The starting pitcher allowed five hits and one run over seven innings, striking out three and walking none. Peters took the loss for Sturgis Post 33, allowing eight hits and three runs over six innings, striking out five and walking three.
Beau Peters, Jake Peters, Christenson, Yaden Miller, and Herren each collected one hit for Sturgis Post 33. Christenson went 1-for-3 at the plate as the outfielder led the team with one run batted in.
Smith and Rees each collected two hits for Post 15 East. Tolk, Fitzsimmons, and Glovich each drove in a run for Sioux Falls.
Game two in the best-of-three playoff is Friday at noon at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls.
