PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. — Pennington County Search and Rescue is sharing details of Tuesday’s rescue mission in the Black Hills.
Two people were stuck in a foot of snow and 70-mile-an-hour winds.
On Tuesday, the US National Weather Service, Rapid City, SD was reporting the higher elevation (6000ft+) areas of the Black Hills would see additional snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches, with some locally higher amounts possible, through Wednesday morning.
The rescue mission occurred roughly five hours after the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department released a statement stating that the Black Hills was unsuitable for travel.
The individuals were recovered safely.
While the weather has settled down somewhat, the storm system that’s been causing bad weather will continue to loiter over the region for the next day or so. While things won’t be quite as windy – breezy winds will continue across portions of the South Dakota plains through Friday.
Showers and the occasional thunderstorm will taper off through Thursday with weather warming up and drying out by this weekend as the storm finally makes its exit.
