Two local veterans honored as part of Military Appreciation Day at the Rally

STURGIS, S.D. – Tuesday was military appreciation day at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as two local veterans were honored.

Cindy Erickson and Arvid Meland were this year’s honorees.

Before they were recognized, Lt Governor Larry Rhoden, S.D. National Guard Col Martin Yost, Ellsworth Air Force Base Wing Commander Col. Joseph Sheffield and Rick Butler on behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars all spoke.

Col. Sheffield joined all speakers in honoring the two veterans.

“Arvid and Cindy, thank you for your service. Thank you for what you’ve done, for us and for our families, this community and for out nation.”

Col. Yost joined Col Sheffield with the honor and added a thanks to all veterans.

Meland says he was honored, but a little bit surprised by the designation.

And, Erickson thanked her family for all their support.

Today’s military appreciation day also included Mayor Mark Carstensen signing a statement of support for the city’s commitment to hiring members of the guard and reserve. Bev Rosenboom is the E.S.G.R. Black Hills Area Representative.

Tuesday’s military appreciation day was capped off by a flyover by two B-1 aircraft from Ellsworth Force Base and an unveiling of the Woody Williams Foundation Gold Star Families Memorial Monument.

A public dedication of the monument will take place later this month.
