Two people walk away from Northern Hills plane crash

LEAD, S.D. – A single-engine plane that took off from Hot Springs lost power over a forested area west of Lead.

The plane crashed shortly before 10:30 a.m.

After a search in extremely rough terrain, the passengers of the aircraft were located by members of Lawrence County Search and Rescue. The Lead Volunteer Fire Department utilized the ability of RON 1 to transport the EMS crew from Monument Health Northern Hills Ambulance directly to the passengers to further evaluate their health and possible injuries.

Both of the occupants, who are from Kansas, walked away with minor, non-life threatening injuries.

The crash will be investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. Lawrence Count Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) will assist in the investigation.

In addition to LCSO, Lawrence County Search and Rescue, Lawrence County Search and Rescue, Lead Fire Department, Deadwood Fire Department, Spearfish Fire Department, and Deadwood Monument Health Ambulance all responded to the scene.
