WHITEWOOD, S.D. — The South Dakota Highway Patrol says three people were hurt in a two vehicle crash that occurred Thursday morning on I-90 near Whitewood.
The patrol says the accident happened just after 10:30 a.m. near mile marker 22.
The accident occurred when a 2000 Chevy Blazer that was traveling eastbound came upon a 2012 Chevy Colorado that was merging back onto the highway from the shoulder of the road.
The Blazer, unable to slow down in time, struck the back of the Colorado, sending the Colorado off the road, into a ditch, up a small hill and through a barbwire fence. The Blazer came to rest in the driving lane of I-90.
The driver of the blazer was taken to the hospital in Spearfish for treatment of what the patrol says were minor injuries. The 81-year-old driver of the Colorado was taken to the hospital in Rapid City with more serious injuries, although the patrol says they were not life threatening. A passenger in the Colorado did receive life-threatening injuries, and was also taken to Rapid City.
The patrol says none of the occupants were wearing seat belts.
Responding to the scene were Spearfish Ambulance Service, Whitewood Ambulance, Whitewood Volunteer Fire department, Whitewood Police, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, and South Dakota Highway Patrol.
