United Way, Sturgis chapter opens month of caring

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis chapter of the United Way of the Black Hills kicked off their month of caring with an event at Rally Point in downtown Sturgis Thursday morning.

Teams gathered for donuts and coffee as they celebrated an event that will include several volunteer led community activities through the month.

Volunteers will spend the month helping with community projects, including yard cleanup at area homes, painting and cleaning for Happy Tails Horse Rescue in Piedmont and working with Monument Health Staff to clean up the ditches at Exits 30 and 32.

John Cass is Executive Director of the United Way of the Black Hills.

Cass says there are 900 volunteers who participate in the month of caring, and talks about the events.

Another event will be members of the Black Hills Social Services helping to clean up the Sturgis area bike trails.

The mission of the United Way of the Black Hills is to unite people and services to improve lives in the Black Hills by delivering measurable long-term solutions to community issues in education, financial stability and health.
