STURGIS, S.D. – A Utah company is planning a 100-megawatt Solar Energy Facility to be built east of Sturgis, off of Alkali Road.
The proposed facility is in response to Black Hills Energy’s call for more renewable energy resources.
Balance Rock Power of Moab, Utah, says the renewable energy it produces should likely offset reliance on the company’s carbon-based plants and resources.
Black Hills Power says the project is one of many responses to requests for proposals for up to 100 megawatts of renewable energy sources that will meet customer needs identified in their Integrated Resource Plan. That plan provides a roadmap for defining the appropriate energy and capacity additions that are required to reliably and economically service customers.
The solar energy facility will span approximately 1,100 acres and cost $120 million dollars to build.
Balanced Rock Power is working through all of the government permitting requirements and landowner relations to lay the groundwork for construction of the facility. It hopes to obtain all of its permits from Meade County in mid to late-2023.
