STURGIS, S.D. – The City of Sturgis Ice Rink, located near the Sturgis Community Center, was vandalized overnight Monday.
Sturgis Public Works Director Rick Bush said someone took apart some of the rink’s side walls and unfortunately, since the ice has now re-frozen in the wrong position, city staff are unable to reconnect the sidewall pieces without damaging the liner or the walls.
“It will now be necessary to lock it up and close it down in order for no further damage to occur,” Bush said.
City staff check on the rink each morning and found the damage early Tuesday.
With the forecast for more cold weather, it could take a couple weeks for the ice to thaw enough for crews to reconnect the sidewall pieces.
“You feel bad for the people who truly want to use it and can’t,” Bush said.
