PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has appointed the lead prosecutor in the Senate impeachment trial against former Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg to fill the remainder of Ravnsborg’s term.
Noem’s appointment of Pennington County State’s Attorney Mark Vargo as attorney general was effective Tuesday.
Vargo will serve as attorney general until he’s replaced by the winner of the November election.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Lara Rochelle Roetzel was appointed and sworn into office by Presiding Judge Craig Pfeifle as the Interim Pennington County State’s Attorney on Tuesday.
This follows State’s Attorney Mark Vargo being named as the Attorney General for the State of South Dakota.
She has served as a prosecuting attorney for the majority of her 26-year legal career. Since 2009, she has acted as Chief Criminal Deputy State’s Attorney for Pennington County. In that capacity she has litigated hundreds of homicide, sexual assault and other high-profile cases, as well as acted as an administrator for the office.
