Vehicle falls through the ice at Lions Club Pond Monday

STURGIS, S.D. – A driver mistook Lions Club Pond in Sturgis for a parking lot, and broke through the thin ice Monday afternoon.

Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says officers were dispatch to the pond at approximately 2:00 p.m. for a vehicle that had crashed into the pond.

The driver was able to get out of his vehicle and get back on land safely.

VanDewater says the driver was driving and thought the pond, which is frozen, was a parking lot and pulled in to use his phone.

A tow truck was able to pull the vehicle out and he was checked by the Sturgis Ambulance but denied any injuries.
