Victim in Rapid Valley homicide identified

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim and the suspect in a Rapid Valley homicide which happened on November 13.

Authorities say the incident is under investigation as a murder-attempted suicide.

The victim is identified as 32-year-old Mercades Dahlvang from Philip. The suspect is Steven Custer, 33 years old from Rapid City. He remains in the hospital in critical condition. is currently hospitalized due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities were sent to the 4000 Gypsey Lane in Rapid Valley after receiving reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, law enforcement found a male and female lying in the front yard of the residence.

Dahlvang and Custer were promptly taken to the hospital, where Dahlvang succumbed to her injuries.
