RAPID CITY, S.D. – Tuesday, June 6, is municipal election day in Rapid City and five candidates are vying to become Rapid City’s newest mayor.
Without a runoff, residents have only one chance to vote for city leadership positions. In the non-partisan mayoral race, each candidate offers different visions for the direction of the tourism hub and state’s second-largest city.
The field of candidates includes two current City Council members Jason Salamun and Laura Armstrong. Two former council members, Ron Weifenbach and former Wall and Rapid City Councilor and hotel owner Brad Estes, and political newcomer and business owner Josh Lyle are the other candidates.
The new mayor takes over the non-partisan office July 3rd and is sworn in at the City Council meeting.
There is also a council race in three of Rapid City’s wards. Candidates in Ward 1 are Josh Biberdorf, Pat Jones and Jerry Long. Candidates running for Ward 3 are Rob Kerghron, Chad Lewis and Kevin Maher. And, running for the Ward 4 seat are Valeriah Big Eagle and John Roberts.
Also Tuesday, is a school board election for the Rapid City Area Schools. There are six candidates running for an open seat in Area 4 and Area 5.
Running for Area 4 are Walter Swan Jr., Karen Woods, Gerald Harvey and Amy Sazue.
Candidates running for Area 5 are Christine Stephenson and Paul Lloyd.
