WalletHub Study – South Dakota Is 2021’s 4th Best State for Military Retirees

UNDATED – With May being Military Appreciation Month and the U.S. planning to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan this year, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2021’s Best & Worst States for Military Retirees, as well as accompanying videos, along with its Memorial Day Facts infographic.

To help our troops plan their years after service, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 30 key indicators of retirement-friendliness toward veterans. The data set ranges from job opportunities for veterans to housing affordability to quality of VA hospitals.

Military Retirement in South Dakota (1=Best; 25=Avg.):

  • 10th – Veterans per Capita
  • 14th – Number of VA Health Facilities per Number of Veterans
  • 3rd – % of Homeless Veterans
  • 2nd – Veteran Job Opportunities
  • 7th – Housing Affordability
  • 11th – % of Veteran-Owned Businesses
  • 14th – COVID-19 Positive Tests in the Past Week per Capita

Memorial Day Facts

  • 91 – Number of members of the 117th Congress who have served in the U.S. military, the lowest total since at least World War II.
  • 2.4+ Million – Number of veterans fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • 2.5 Million – People are expected to travel by plane over Memorial Day weekend (nearly six times more than in 2020).
  • 818 – Number of hot dogs consumed every second from Memorial Day to Labor Day (seven billion total).
  • 20 to 80 Percent Off – Discount shoppers can expect during Memorial Day weekend sales.
