Wanda D. Hogan

On October 28, 2024, Wanda D. Hogan, 93, was called home to be with the Lord. Formerly of Newell, she had been residing at Rolling Hills Healthcare Center in Belle Fourche.

Wanda Darlene Symonds was born February 27, 1931 to Lewis and Pearl (Anderson) Symonds in Sturgis, SD. She was the 7th of 10 children raised in the Sulfer area. She attended elementary school at the Royal Center school, and went on to high school in Sturgis. In those days, get togethers were rolling skating and dancing at the Maurine Hall. 

She met Ross Hogan at one of the dances. They were married March 1, 1948. The moved to the Hogan Homestead for a time, then to the Stanley Smeenk Ranch working for Stanley and Jack for a few years before moving into Newell. Wanda was a homemaker and excellent cook raising 6 children. A few years later they moved to Mud Butte, working for Glen and Alvin Wahlfeldt. Wanda went to work for Whitey Lemmel at Mud Butte. The Hogan family then moved back into Newell in 1964. Wanda went to work for the Clogrove and Page families in their café business. First as a waitress, then as their head cook. She had customers clamoring for her homemade caramel rolls, pies, and potato soup. She later worked at the local locker plant before her and Ross moved to Hulett and Moorcroft, WY. While there she delivered rural mail and worked at a department store and thrift store. Upon Ross’s death, she moved to Heritage Acres Apartments in Sturgis where she lived for the next 20+ years. While in her own apartment doing her cooking and cleaning at the age of 90. In September of 2021, she went into assisted living, then into nursing home care in March of 2023.

Wanda enjoyed cooking as well as bowling. She was a great mother, loving her children, raising them to be hard working. She especially loved and enjoyed all of her grandkids.

Wanda is survived by five children. Beverly Bruse of Sturgis, SD; Michael Hogan of Moorcroft, WY; Patricia (Gary) Sattler of Rapid City, SD; Connie (Gary) Donahey of Newell, SD; and Doug (Sheryl) Hogan of Rapid City, SD; a sister, Hope (Clinton) Septka of Sturgis, SD; and brother, Don (LaVonne) Symonds of Longmont, CO; 13 grandkids; 38 great-grandkids; and 6 great-great grandkids.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ross in 1999 and her eldest son Darrell in 2016 and son-in-law Jerry Bruse in 2015; parents Lewis and Pearl; brothers, Robert, John, Marvin; sisters, Lois, LaVonne, Lamerne, and Ardith.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 4, 2024 at 1:30 pm at the Sturgis First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Hope Cemetery near Newell. Fellowship following interment at the N-V-N Senior Center in Newell. 

A memorial has been established to the Newell Ambulance.
