Wednesday, December 23 COVID-19 Update – 8 new deaths, 491 new cases

PIERRE, S.D. – State health officials reported 8 new COVID-19 deaths Wednesday, sending the state’s death toll to 1,389. The new deaths were among six men and two women.

New cases totaled 491 Wednesday with active cases down 313 to 7,314.

The number of people hospitalized remained steady at 341.

Pennington County reported 115 new cases, sending the total to 10,728. The number of active cases went back up over 1,000 today to 1,030.

Meade County added 20 new cases today, and the cumulative total is 2,149. Active cases in Meade decreased by 5 Wednesday to 175.

In Lawrence County, 9 new cases were reported to send the total to 2,450. There ae 161 active cases in Lawrence – down 13 from Tuesday.

Butte County added 3 new cases Wednesday, Oglala Lakota had 9 new cases and there was one new case out of Custer County.

Fifty of South Dakota’s 66 counties are listed as having “substantial” community spread. Eleven counties are listed having “moderate” community spread. Campbell County, Harding County, Hyde County and Sully County are listed as having “minimal” community spread. Jones County is now listed as having no community spread.

There were 1,528 new persons tested reported on Wednesday. Wednesday’s new person tested positivity rate is 34%.
