PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota health officials reported 1,574 new cases of COVID-19 in their weekly report released Wednesday.
Active cases increased to 4,433 and there are seven more hospitalizations this week – totaling 89. Health care systems in the Black Hills account for 22 of the total hospitalizations.
There were seven new deaths reported this week, sending the state’s death toll since the pandemic began to 2,963. Of the new deaths, one was out of Pennington County where the death toll rises to 351.
Pennington County reported 241 new cases of the virus this week with Lawrence County reporting the second most with 50.
Meade County tallied 41 new cases and Oglala Lakota County reported 29.
Elsewhere, Fall River County had 22, Custer County showed 15 and there were 14 new cases out of Butte County.
As of July 27, 57 of South Dakota’s 66 counties are listed as having “high” or “substantial” community spread. “High” community spread is 100 cases or greater per 100,000 or a 10% or greater PCR test positivity rate.
