PIERRE, S.D. – For a third week in a row, the number of new COVID-19 cases increased as health officials reported 595 new cases Wednesday.
The weekly report from the health department also showed an increase in the number of active cases statewide – up 224 from last week to 1,470 this week.
Nine new deaths were reported, sending the state’s death toll to 2,928. Of the new deaths, three were out of Pennington County.
Across the Black Hills area, there were 181 new cases. Pennington County added the most with 109 being reported.
Meade County had the second highest amount of new cases with 23 and Lawrence County added 17.
Elsewhere, there were 10 each in Custer and Oglala Lakota County, 8 in Fall River, 3 in Butte County and one new case was reported in Harding County.
Pennington, Meade, Custer and Butte Counties are listed under the substantial spread category. Lawrence, Fall River and Oglala Lakota are listed under the moderate spread category.
