Windy weather fans number of fires Monday

STURGIS, S.D. – Monday’s windy weather kept area crew fires busy, knocking down a handful of brush fires.

The first fire was an old burn pile that reignited due to the winds on property off of Fort Meade Way east of Sturgis.

Upon arrival, first responders radioed a couple of trees were on fire, as was some pasture land surrounding the burn.

Crews were able to stop the progression of the fire.

Monday afternoon, crews were dispatched to 201st and Avalanche Road for a grass fire.

The fire reportedly burned between 5 and 6 acres before crews stopped its forward progression.

Other fires were reported east of Newell and in the Nisland area on Monday.
