STURGIS, S.D. – Schools, some businesses and city offices were closed today as Winter Storm Olive trekked across South Dakota.
The latest winter storm to hit the state brought closed roads in eastern South Dakota, but most roads remained open in our area, although they were in poor condition.
Here in Sturgis, Public Works Crews were out plowing emergency routes through the day, but held off on plowing city wide until the snow moved off to the east. That isn’t supposed to happen until early tomorrow morning.
Sturgis Public Works Director Rick Bush says that’s to maximize their resources and to only have to plow the entire town once.
The heavy wind that was part of a December blizzard that hit the Black Hills was absent from this latest storm – and drifting was not as serious as a problem as it was then.
Still, snowfall totals were piling up this afternoon as the snow continued. Unofficially, between 7 and 9 inches of snow had fallen along the I-90 corridor from Spearfish down to the Piedmont area. Forecasters say to expect another 1 to 3 inches tonight.
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. Bitterly cold temperatures will also continue Thursday, with moderating temperatures into the 40’s by the weekend.
