STURGIS, S.D. – Roads are slippery and accidents have been reported as a winter storm ushers in more cold air and snow to start the weekend.
The National Weather Service has winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories up for most of the area today and into tonight.
Snow began in northwestern South Dakota this morning and is moving across western and central South Dakota today. The heaviest snow is expected to occur with bands across areas from northwest to south central South Dakota, along with favored upslope regions to the northern Black Hills and foothills. Some blowing and drifting of snow is also likely due to breezy northeast to north winds.
Roads are slippery around the Black Hills area. The South Dakota Department of Transportation reports I-90 from the Wyoming line to Rapid City has scattered slippery and icy spots with some snow cover. There have been accidents reported on the Interstate this morning. One has been reported near Piedmont and another was reported near Whitewood.
Snow will gradually taper off from north to south late Saturday night and into Sunday. Near-record cold temperatures are expected behind this system from late this weekend into early next week.
Winter Storm Warnings encompass the Black Hills and the foothills to include Sturgis and Spearfish. Central South Dakota is also under a Winter Storm Warning. The remainder of the area is under a Winter Weather Advisory.
