Winter Weather closes some area schools Thursday

STURGIS, S.D. – Another bout of winter weather is hitting the area today, leading to some poor travel conditions and school closures.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 5:00 this evening for northwestern South Dakota, the northern hills, northeast Wyoming and southeast Montana.

Sturgis, Spearfish and Whitewood are all in the advisory. Lead, Deadwood and the higher hills are under a winter storm warning.

Two to four inches of snow is expected along the I-90 corridor from Spearfish down to Piedmont. Six to eight is possible in the Black Hills.

Gusty northwest winds will create areas of blowing and drifting snow with poor visibility.

SD511 has a no travel advisory on roads in the immediate area, including I-90 from the Wyoming line to Piedmont, Highway 34 east of Sturgis, Highway 14A from Sturgis Deadwood, and Highway 85 between Spearfish and Deadwood.

Last night, first responders were on scene of a multi-vehicle accident just off I-90’s Exit 23. No details of that accident had been released yet.
