Winter Weather moves in as year comes to close

STURGIS, S.D. – A fast moving clipper is bringing widespread snow to the area today, with Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings posted for most of western South Dakota.

Forecasters say brisk north-northwest winds may create some blowing and drifting snow on the plains with reduced visibility as well.

Snowfall accumulations of 1-4” are expected on the plains with locally higher amounts in heavier snow bands. Accumulations of 6-12” are expected for the northern Black Hills with locally higher amounts possible.

The Winter Storm Warning encompasses the northern Black Hills, including Lead-Deadwood, Spearfish, Whitewood and St Onge.

Sturgis and Rapid City are both included in the Winter Weather Advisory, and 3-7 inches is expected today. The Advisory includes all of western South Dakota, with the exception of the extreme southwestern corner.

The hazardous travel conditions will impact the morning and evening commute. Plan on slippery road conditions. Use caution if traveling.
