RAPID CITY – A Rapid City woman has been sentenced after beating her brother to death over an Xbox console.
Lucy Medicine Eagle, 33, was at a residence in St. Francis in the Rosebud Reservation, drinking alcohol with family members on March 28, 2022.
Medicine Eagle got into an argument with her adult brother, thinking he had stolen and pawned her Xbox gaming console. In actuality, Medicine Eagle’s Xbox had simply been misplaced and was behind a couch nearby.
Medicine Eagle attacked her brother, punching him repeatedly in the head. Despite his pleas for her to stop and his attempts to shield himself from the attack, Medicine Eagle continued to assault her brother, only stopping when other household members intervened.
By that time, the victim had suffered severe head injuries and was soon unresponsive. He was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City and kept on life support until he passed away on April 1, 2022.
The victim’s cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma injuries to the head.
A federal grand jury indicted Medicine Eagle in June of 2022 on a charge of Second-Degree Murder. She took a plea deal and pleaded guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter on April 26, 2024.
The sentencing took place on August 1, 2024. Lucy Medicine Eagle was sentenced to 4 years and 9 months in federal prison followed by 3 years of supervised release. She was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
After her sentencing, Medicine Eagle was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
