Woman hit by vehicle prior to teacher parade in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Authorities say a woman was taken to the hospital Thursday morning after being struck a vehicle prior to a teacher parade at Valley View Elementary school. The parade was being held to mark the end of the school year.

Helene Duhamel with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says two staff members were trying to coordinate their vehicles leading up to a parade where teachers had planned to drive through the neighborhood, waving at students to celebrate the end of the semester. One of the staffers was struck by one of the vehicles in the Valley View parking lot.

The woman struck by the vehicle was injured and taken to Monument Health Rapid City Hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown.

Duhamel says the incident was unintentional and no charges are pending or expected.

Communications Manager for Rapid City Area Schools, Katy Urban, says the parade was cancelled as a result of the accident.
