RAPID CITY, S.D. – Authorities in Pennington County are investigating a hit and run Saturday that involved children.
Police say they arrested 22-year-old Rachel Pumpkinseed and a male when they tried to flee the scene of an accident in the east parking lot of Rushmore Mall.
Pumpkinseed, the driver of a Chevrolet Trailblazer that struck two cars in the mall’s parking lot, has been charged with multiple counts of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Police report they have also taken three juveniles who inside the Trailblazer into custody. One child suffered a scratch to the chin, but the other three children reportedly suffered no injuries.
According to Sergeant Billy Davis with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement started the search for the subjects at 12:45 PM after Pumpkinseed had allegedly hit a 4-year-old boy on Elkhorn Lane a few miles away.
Paramedics dispatched to the neighborhood to treat the injured child for minor injuries. He did not need to be transferred to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
RCPD has turned the case over to PCSO, who will continue to investigate the incidents.
