Work begins on cleaning up Alkali Creek Horse Camp

STURGIS, S.D. – Volunteers with Black Hills Back Country Horsemen and the Bureau of Land Management team up this week to begin the cleanup of the Alkali Creek Horse Camp area near Sturgis.

The camp was vandalized in January.

B.L.M. officials say the estimated cost to repair the campground is around $17,000 for materials alone.

Vandals tore down a picnic shelter, ran over a kiosk with information on it and crashed through a couple of gates that had the road closed at the time.

Officials say it is one of the worst cases of vandalism they have seen at the recreation area.

The B.L.M. is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible.
