STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis Public Works says construction has begun on the 7th street crossing over Bear Butte Creek.
The previous structure was washed away during flooding in the summer of 2019.
FEMA issued a public assistant grant to the city for aid in the design and replacement of the 7th Street box culvert. The project was approve by FEMA and Heavy Constructers is scheduled to begin this month.
The scope of the project is to replace the Box Culvert structure, reconnect the bike path across the culvert and tie into Woodland Drive, as well as pavement improvements at the intersection of Woodland and 7th. It is anticipated that crews will be working Monday through Friday during daylight hours. Saturday work is currently not expected.
Public Works says the intersection of Woodland and 7th will eventually be closed for a period of time to perform the pavement improvements and to tie the new road into the completed bridge. During periods of road closure, it is recommended to detour through 9th Street to access the neighborhood.
The current schedule will see the project starting in February and being completed by July 1st, 2023.
