HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Following a kill by Carsyn Mettler to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the early stages in set one, South Dakota Mines set the tone for the match with a 7-1 scoring run to push their lead to 12-4. Abigail Renner and Jaeda Davis-Golliher sent down kills to momentarily stall the momentum, however the Hardrockers extended their advantage to double digits (18-7) with a 5-1 run midway through the frame. The Yellow Jackets recorded three consecutive points with back-to-back kills by Davis-Golliher and Randi Wellhoefer in addition to an SDM attack error to briefly cut the deficit back to single digits (18-10), however South Dakota Mines would end the set on another 7-1 scoring run to earn a 25-11 set one victory to take a 1-0 match lead.
  • South Dakota Mines jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in set two, before a 4-2 run by Black Hills State, which featured a pair of kills by Emily Freeland, cut the deficit to 6-5. The one point difference was the closest the Yellow Jackets would get as the Hardrockers scored four unanswered points to extend their lead to 10-5. SDM led by as many as seven points on multiple occasions during the frame and went on to earn the 25-18 victory in set two to take the 2-0 match lead.
  • A bad set by South Dakota Mines gave Black Hills State the opening point of set three, concurrently giving them their first lead of the night, however five consecutive points by the Hardrockers quickly saw them regain their advantage. The teams went back-and-forth from that point on until SDM built a 12-point lead (21-9) with a 13-4 scoring run, but BHSU continued to have some fight left in them and would not go away quietly. Black Hills State trimmed the deficit down to five points (23-18) as they strung together their best scoring run of the night at 9-2 as the rally was sparked by a kill by Mettler and capped by a service ace by Wellhoefer. The Hardrockers closed out the frame with back-to-back kills for the 25-18 set three victory to earn the 3-0 match win.
  • South Dakota Mines held the advantage in points (59.0-34.0), kills (52-32), aces (4-2), blocks (3-0), assists (43-30), and digs (58-47).
