JERAULD COUNTY, S.D. — Heavy fog and icy road conditions were reported during the time of a collision that has killed a 12-year-old girl.
On January 26, 2024, a driver of a Ford Fusion was traveling west on South Dakota Highway 34 near Wessington Springs in heavy fog, according to the Department of Public Safety.
An eastbound school bus was stopped in the opposite lane to pick up a student.
As the vehicle got closer, officials say the school bus lights became visible and the driver hit her brakes and slid on the ice.
At that time, the 12-year-old was crossing the street to board the bus and was struck by the vehicle.
The student was transported to a nearby hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries and was later transferred to a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital where she died Tuesday morning from her injuries.
The 28-year-old driver of the Fusion had no injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
