STURGIS, S.D.—The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are far reaching, and now they’re even impacting highway rest areas.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation announced that in order to combat the spread of the virus, they are temporarily closing buildings at the state’s 21 rest areas, effective immediately, until further notice. Parking lot areas will remain open for use by the public.
The North Dakota DOT does not have cleaning personnel continuously posted at rest areas.
Toilet paper has become a coveted supply at grocery stores across the country in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, with many struggling to keep up with demand.
Now it appears people have found another way to get some: rest stop bathrooms.
Travelers have been stealing toilet paper at stops along Interstate 80 in Nebraska, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. It’s gotten so bad, the Department of Transportation has had to make some changes.
A spokesperson told the newspaper that rest areas will now be closed when an attendant is not present. Truck parking should remain open.
South Dakota Secretary of Transporation Darin Bergquist says closing them in South Dakota is something they have considered. For now, Bergquist says they’re increasing cleaning efforts to keep them open.
