PIERRE, S.D. – The state health department says active cases increased by 300 today as 455 new cases of COVID-19 were reported. The new caseload includes 412 confirmed cases and 43 that are probable. Five new cases of the Delta variant have been confirmed, bringing the total cases of the highly contagious variant detected in South Dakota to 80.
Active cases now total 3,416 and the number of people hospitalized increased by four to 145 statewide. Sixty-seven of those hospitalized are in the Black Hills region.
Two new deaths were reported today, sending the state’s death toll to 2,059.
Across the Black Hills area, Pennington County reported the most new cases today with 107 confirmed and 20 probable for total of 127.
The only other probable case in the Black Hills region was Butte County, who also added 14 confirmed new cases.
Meade County had the second highest amount of new cases today with 38. There were 27 new cases reported in Lawrence County.
Elsewhere, Fall River County added 9 new cases and there were three new cases each in Custer and Oglala Lakota counties.
