City employees rescue kitten from drain ahead of rain storm

RAPID CITY, S.D.  — A rescue from a storm drain ahead of torrential rain had a happy ending.

The rescue was a team effort between Rapid City employees who saved a kitten from a storm drain in the city hall parking lot Wednesday (Sept. 13) afternoon.

The city said in a news release that the kitten, now named Stormy, was rescued hours before heavy rain fell in the downtown area.

Rescuers had to practice a lot of patient. The kitten was frightened and wouldn’t respond to initial efforts to rescue it.   Two employees went into the storm drain box to rescue the kitten while other employees gathered to help coax the animal to safety.

But the kitten wouldn’t budge.

Finally, employees decided to try setting a safety trap while checking on the trapped feline throughout the afternoon. Sometime between setting the trap and around 4 p.m., the kitten decided the safety trap was a better bet than staying where it was in the storm drain.

The kitten spent Wednesday night with city employees. Stormy spent Thursday with the utility department and has found a permanent home with a city employee.
