Community works together to keep retail, services in place, open during COVID-19

STURGIS, SD – Proactive best describes the mindset in the Sturgis community when it comes to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.  Executive Director Veronica Grosek of the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau describes how it may not be business as usual, but the doors are open in Sturgis retail and other services.

Grosek and other business leaders in the community are making a collaborative effort. “We’ve been working hard to reach out to our members and letting them know of different opportunities for economic assistance as that becomes available.”

As the state’s largest tourism event, the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally looms, Grosek is fielding calls from around the country and the world.  “We tell people that as of now, the Rally and other popular spring, summer and fall events in Sturgis are on.”

The Chamber, the Sturgis Economic Development , Sturgis city officials and the Greater Sturgis Foundation are all working together to access information available that is designed to bring some financial relief opportunities to businesses being impacted by the pandemic.

“Sturgis Economic Development and the Chamber have been collaborating heavily to make sure we have all the latest information,” says. Grosek. “I think the lines of communication are really helping the community.”

A number of retail stores in the Sturgis community are putting in place measures to address the most vulnerable, establishing shopping hours geared to age groups and those with underlying conditions in efforts to limit their exposure to crowds.   Others are establishing curb-side services, having closed their in-store seating.

“I encourage everyone to exercise caution and follow CDC guidelines,” says Grosek.  “In addition, I want people to know it’s very important to continue to support our small and local businesses.”
