Contract signed for 10-year deal between civic center, medical conglomerate

RAPID CITY, S.D,  – With the new civic center expansion project in full swing, the naming rights for the 250,000 square foot facility began and ended with a regional healthcare provider.

While the Rapid City Civic Center Board unanimously approved the naming contract with Regional Health officials (soon to be known as Monument Health) this week, community members and business leaders were part of a discussion that aired some confusion over language in the contract.

Discussion centered around provisions in sports medicine contracts for events at the facility. Contractual language says  visiting teams from outside of the area can bring their own sports medicine providers. Some local sports medicine providers questioned the language as being exclusive to outside providers and leaving them out.

Following clarification of the language the contract signing moved forward.

The $360,000 a year, 10-year contract for naming rights of the civic center in Rapid City  grants Monument Health the naming rights to the entire 250,000 square foot civic center and all of the included arenas, theaters and meeting rooms.

It includes such perks as tickets to events, the right to hold free health fairs and the right to use rooms in the civic center at no charge.

The name change of the civic center to ‘The Monument,’ and the beginning of the contract will take effect in July 2021.
