COVID-19 hospitalizations reach new high Monday as active cases surpass 16,000

PIERRE, S.D. – State health officials reported 907 new COVID-19 cases Monday as active cases surpassed 16,000 to 16,266.

The number of people hospitalized due to the virus jumped 20 today to 566. That is a new single-day high for the state. The number of available I.C.U. beds across the Black Hills region dwindled to 13.7-percent Monday from 16.7-percent on Sunday.

Locally, here in Meade County, there are 4 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 using general beds with 1 COVID-19 patient in I.C.U. In neighboring Lawrence County, there are 6 COVID-19 patients hospitalized using general hospital beds and 2 patients are in I.C.U. In Pennington County, 12 COVID-19 patients are using I.C.U. beds with 83 occupying general hospital beds.

One new death was reported Monday, sending the state’s death toll to 537.

New COVID-19 cases across West River Monday totaled 171. Pennington County accounted for 89 of those, sending the cumulative total there to 5,856 with 1,657 remaining active.

Lawrence County added 22 new cases Monday, sending the total to 1,371 and 485 remaining active.

Meade County reported 14 new cases, sending the total to 1,226 and 303 remain active.

Other cases across West River Monday included 7 in Tripp, 6 in Butte, 5 in Todd, 4 each in Corson and Oglala Lakota, 3 each in Gregory and Mellette, 2 each in Stanley and Haakon and one each in Custer, Fall River, Perkins, Dewey and Ziebach.
