Custer County sees second fatal motorcycle crash in as many days

KEYSTONE, S.D. – For the second time this week, the highway patrol reports a motorcycle crash has killed one person in Custer County.

The patrol says the latest accident happened Wednesday afternoon when a crash occurred south of Keystone.

Names of the people involved are not yet being released pending notification of family members.

A 1996 Harley Davidson motorcycle was westbound on Iron Mountain Road when the driver failed to negotiate a right-hand curve. The motorcycle entered the oncoming lane and collided with an eastbound 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup.

The 58-year-old male motorcycle driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

Both occupants of the pickup, a female driver and a male passenger, were wearing seat belts and were not injured. Both are 41 years old.

Earlier this week, a motorcycle collided with a truck hauling gravel on U.S. Highway 385 south of Custer. The truck had attempted to pass the motorcycle as it was making a left turn. The motorcyclist was thrown from the bike and died at the scene.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate both crashes.
