Erney E. Sharp

Erney E. Sharp, 92, Spearfish, died Friday, November 3, 2023, at Spearfish Canyon Healthcare. Memorial services for Erney will be at 1:00 PM, on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Inurnment, with military honors, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Erney Eldred Sharp was born June 18, 1931 to Claude and Emma (Willams) Sharp on their homestead in the Badlands near Conata, SD. They later moved to Wessington Springs, SD, where he attended school until the 8th grade. He then spent time working with a brother raising cattle and later with another brother in the timber industry. He then entered the U.S. Army, where he served for four years. After his honorable discharge from the Army, He returned to Igloo, SD and worked at the Black Hills Ordnance Depot. He married Carolyn Fern Robb in 1955 and had 4 kids. Then later got divorced in 1964.  Erney was a single dad and met Betty Joy Strand. They got married on April 30 1965, and moved to Rapid City, SD. Where he spent the next 40 plus years working as a plumber at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Erney and Betty adopted a grandson, Jason Sharp. Erney retired from Ellsworth Air Force Base in 1985 to take care of Betty. Betty passed away in 2008. Erney enjoyed fishing, hunting and hanging out at the VFW with his friends once a week. In 2011 Erney met Barbara Fonder through a mutual friend. They got married on June 11 2011 in Whitewood, SD. Erney and Barbara enjoyed going on trips, fishing and dancing at the VFW in Sturgis. Erney and Barbara found out that Erney had Lewy body dementia in 2016.  A special thanks to Spearfish Canyon Healthcare Staff for taking care of Erney.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Sharp, Spearfish; children, Robert (Chery) Sharp, Bismarck, ND, Erney E. “Pete” (Carol) Sharp, Jr. Craig, CO, Arlet Lapp, Bismarck, ND, Nadine Sharp, Spearfish, SD, and Jason Sharp, Sioux Falls; stepdaughters, Pam (Dennis) Apland, Belle Fourche, Patricia (Wade) Evens, Hot Springs, Paula (Cameron) Frick, Spearfish, SD; along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Erney was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Betty and 9 Sisters and 7 Brothers.
