Fallen Sturgis Firefighter remembered Monday on second anniversary of his death

STURGIS, S.D. – A fallen Sturgis firefighter was remembered Monday, two years after he was killed in the line of duty.

David Fischer was killed September 7th, 2018 after being struck by a piece of propane tank that had exploded while he was fighting a Tilford-area fire that also killed the home’s occupant, 82-year-old Raymond Bachmeier.

Fischer was a longtime Guard soldier for the South Dakota National Guard and served as an assistant fire chief of the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department and was a 22-year veteran of the department.

Fischer was also a survey team member with the Rapid City-based 82nd Civil Support team with the South Dakota National Guard.

Since Fischer’s death, A couple has started a community fund to help the families of first responders in Sturgis.

The Albert and Laverne Elliott First Responders Fund at the Black Hills Area Community Foundation are named for the couple who donated $20,000 to start the fund.
