Fire crews battle wildfire near Piedmont early Tuesday morning

PIEDMONT, S.D. — For the second day in a row, fire crews battled a wildfire that had the potential to grow with gusty winds and dry conditions.

The latest wildfire was reported in the 2100 block of Ricard Road near Piedmont.

Fire crews from Pennington and Meade Counties responded to the fire around 3:00 a.m.

Pennington County Fire reported the fire spread to 8 acres before being stopped.

Threats to structures and infrastructure are being mitigated and the fire was not expected to spread or escape initial control lines despite the heavy winds today.

There was no word on the cause of the fire. It follows a nearly six acre fire that burned near Hisega Monday.

Pennington & Meade County Based Fire Departments along with Summerset Police Department, Meade County Sheriff’s Office, West River Electrical Cooperative, Black Hawk Fire Corp, Pennington County 911 and Meade County Dispatch are assisting.
