RAPID CITY, S.D. – Hard-working firefighters reached their goal of 100-percent containment of the Schroeder Fire Monday morning.
The fire remained at 2,224 acres.
Despite the containment, it will be a busy day for the fireline leaders and support staff as they prepare to smoothly transfer the management of the fire back to the local fire agencies.
Up on the fire Monday, ground forces will continue the careful, detailed work of extinguishing hot spots, to further widen and secure the containment lines.
Crews on Sunday continued to seek out and extinguish heat sources near the fire perimeter, patrolled containment lines, cleared out unneeded equipment and repaired ground disturbance caused by containment line construction.
Residents around the and within the fire area are reminded they will likely see smoke rising from hot spots on the ridges above Cleghorn Canyon and Nameless Cave Road.
A cold front is expected to move through the area today, and that will not only lower temperatures, but also bring some much needed moisture.
