HURON, S.D. – The Huron Fire Department says an overnight fire has damaged a building at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds.
In a Tweet, the fire department said crews responded to the Beef Complex on the east side of the fairgrounds around midnight. The building is an indoor arena that also hosts rodeo events.
Crews had the fire under control by 4 a.m. Saturday. But the fire chief reports the damage is significant.
The fire department on Saturday urged the public to avoid the Fairgrounds as they conduct an investigation.
A statement from the state on Saturday stated the following:
“No person or animal was injured in the fire, and the buildings in close proximity were evacuated. The Huron, Cavour, and Wolsey Fire Departments responded to the situation. The State Fire Marshal, the Huron Fire Department, and the Department of Criminal Investigation will be conducting a joint investigation into the cause of the fire. At this time, we would like to say thank you to all first responders and firefighters on scene last night as their efforts to contain the fire were exceptional. The South Dakota Barrel Racing Association Finals scheduled to happen on the fairgrounds today, October 31, has been cancelled.”
