Ground breaking held for new Senior Housing Project in Sturgis

STURGIS, S.D. – After years of hard work, ground breaking was held today for Sturgis’ newest senior housing project.

Dolan Creek Senior Housing is a roughly $9.2 million dollar project that will help Sturgis provide housing for its senior population.

Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie says it will allow more people to be able to stay here in the community.

“This will allow people to be able to stay in our community and continue to live their entire life here in Sturgis. Also, it will help with some our housing shortage.”

Sturgis worked with several corporations and entities to make this possible, including the Greater Sturgis Life Care Foundation and Sturgis Economic Development Corporation.

Amanda Anglin is SEDC Executive Director. She says Dolan Creek Senior Housing will help with a significant need for assisted living within the Sturgis Community.

“When we updated the 2014 study in 2019, we knew there was more of a need because of a shortage situation at neighboring Aspen Grove with a wait list. So that’s why we’ve added assisted living into this facility.”

She says the facility will have 50 units with 36 of those set for independent living.

The facility will be run by Empress Health Management, who owns and operates the Aspen Grove Assisted Living Facility next door. Empress will lease the Dolan Creek facility from Gustafson Development.

Construction is expected to be complete by November of 2022.
