STURGIS, S.D. – A local social media group that bills itself ‘Sturgis Citizens for Change’ announced it is circulating a petition to send this week’s city council vote for a host services agreement for a flat track race to a public vote.
The group claims in its social media post that “The Sturgis Citizens can put it to a vote to either Approve or Reject the Professional Service Contract with the AMA.”
The council voted 5-3 Tuesday night to approve the contract that would set up a race that would take place in the downtown corridor on the final day of this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
The race has drawn criticism from some who worry the city may not see a profit from the event. The cost of putting on the event for the city is estimated at nearly $654,000 per year in a five year contract. City officials say the hope is that cost would be offset by sponsorships and the fact the Fox Television Network has reportedly picked up the race.
Acting Mayor and Sturgis Council President Beka Zerbst told KBHB News Tuesday that they had an approximate $400,000 worth in sponsorship interest.
Whether or not the contract can be referred remains to be seen. Sturgis City Attorney Mark Marshall said at this week’s council meeting he didn’t believe it was referable.
