High winds causing havoc across area Tuesday

STURGIS, S.D. – A high wind warning remains in effect for the afternoon hours Tuesday as some residents report wind damage in the area.

In Sturgis, the wind toppled two large pine trees, including one that fell onto a house in the 1500 block of Fulton Street.

Sturgis Police, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office and Sturgis Fire Department all responded to make sure the toppled tree didn’t sever any utility lines and to make sure there were no injuries. The other tree fell onto the road on Spruce Street.

Downed tree limbs and branches were also being reported today in Spearfish, Rapid City and other locations.

The National Weather Service has reported wind gusts between 65 and 75 mph across western South Dakota today.

In the upper elevations of the Black Hills, it’s heavy, wet snow today. The Four Corners area in Wyoming reported power outages as one resident reported between one and two feet of snow. Terry Peak also reported blizzard conditions today and Deerfield reported 7 inches of snow.

Roads in the upper elevations of the Black Hills were in poor shape as well due to the snow.
