Man convicted of rape, murder sentenced to life

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A man who was found guilty of rape and murder was sentenced to life in prison Monday.

James Jumping Eagle was convicted for the rape and murder of 82-year-old Reta McGovern in February of 2021.

Jumping Eagle was given the life sentence for the murder of McGovern and received 50 years on the rape charge.

This is Jumping Eagle’s fifth lifetime felony offense and now has three sexual assault charges.

Jumping Eagle did not have a comment and said he plans on appealing the sentence.
